It is a brewing museum designed to provide a glimpse into the history of brewery in Korea, located on the second floor of Leegangju Factory in Won-dong, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju City. |
Opened in 1993, Gocheon Brewery Museum displays about 1, 400 items of brewery tools and related materials collected over 20 years by Gocheon Cho Jeong-hyeong, who was designated as Intangible Cultural Properties for his skills in brewing Jeonju Leegangju.
Here we preserve valuable items from Three Han period to modern times, such as Togori, a distiller from Joseon period, iron cauldron, and rice wine strainer. Also on display are other extraordinary items such as Gakbae, or cups made of horns during the Three Han period, and Masangbae, or cups used for drinking on horse during the Goryeo Kingdom period.
Gocheon Cho Jeong-hyeong could build this museum because he was born into a family that made it a rule to brew Leegangju on its own for six generations. The secret formula has been passed down from generation to generation until now.
Since 1972, Cho Jeong-hyeong has frequently toured the country to discover more traditional liquors. He came to believe that it is important to recover the roots of our liquor culture as his collection of relevant items, which initially started as a hobby, increased over the last 30 years. |
